Times are UTC interval ends; each frame shows the preceding three-hour total. Playback stays within the selected model run. Soft transitions are visual only; they do not create intermediate forecasts or observations.

STORM FORECAST AND ACTUAL OBSERVATIONS

Thunderstorm and lightning layers

Separate data types · DB only

Contains modified EUMETSAT Meteosat LI L2 Lightning Flashes · CC BY 4.0 · NOAA GOES GLM

⚡ Storm expectation · symbolic animation✦ Observed satellite flash · actual time order

ICON weather codes forecast hourly thunderstorms; available hours of the three-hour interval are shown together and missing hours are reported. A blinking storm symbol is not the time or position of an actual lightning strike. GOES GLM observes the Americas and adjacent oceans; EUMETSAT MTG LI observes Türkiye/Europe, Africa and part of the visible satellite disc. These are not a worldwide lightning network and do not distinguish ground strikes alone. Each source shows its actual DB import status; missing imports do not mean no lightning. Observation playback plays the selected three hours in 12 seconds, then repeats after a short pause; observations are never added to future intervals. Reduced motion keeps symbols static.

At world scale, native ICON cells in the DB are binned for display; zooming uses native model detail. Smooth view blends colours between valid neighbouring cells only. Location queries and CSV preserve native DB values. Not-yet-imported or source-missing areas are not zero rainfall; smoothing never fills them.

Leaflet · Natural Earth · Terrain, boundaries and place names are visual references. The Mercator map is limited to ±85.05°; polar cells remain available through coordinate queries.

When comparing, check three-hour precipitation, model, UTC interval and model run time. Forecasts may differ.

Three-hour time series

Each bar represents an actual forecast interval; missing intervals are never filled with zero. All timestamps are UTC.

Source and method

Native triangular cells and model run metadata from DWD ICON Global are stored in the database. Each three-hour total is the difference between source accumulated precipitation at the interval start and end. This is a global forecast over land and ocean, not a station measurement.

Native cells are approximately 13 km in scale. Timestamps are UTC interval ends; totals cover the preceding three hours. Location queries read the nearest imported native model cell; the raster image is for visualization only.

Persistent archive and freshness

Only ingestion jobs request provider data. User queries and CSV downloads read the GOMD database; missing values never trigger an external request. Model run time, retrieval time, missing intervals and actual DB record counts are displayed separately.
